like many other artist hendrik dijk “found” himself working in a geometric and abstract manner.

much more than it being a very conscious choice.

geometric abstraction is the area that allows him to endlessly explore.

it draws on the reality within his being.

his work is about energy, not about meaning.

he is a colorist and uses form to enable a free chromatic expression.

colours are like people.

they like good neighbours.

there are no bad colours, only bad application.

every colour has character, spirit.

while he is working he feels the spirit of a colour.

it is a fascination that he has known since his earliest days.

it never tires.

colour is light.

he seeks to make colours feel like emanating light.

it is his goal to reach a level of ambiguity where colours are in a harmonious, yet competitive state at the same time, so as to keep the eye of the viewer interested.

hendrik dijk

born in 1948 in de skâns-oostmahorn (oostmahorn), fryslân (friesland), nl.

started traveling in 1973 and lived in japan, korea and scotland.

returned to the netherlands in 1981.

moved to the us in 1983.

settled in 1986 in kingston, new york (near woodstock), (us) to establish a studio there and teach art at the kingston high school.

remigrated to the netherlands in 2012.

lives and works in loenen aan de vecht, utrecht, (nl) as well as the island of schiermonnikoog (nl).

is currently living and working in winaam (wijnaldum), fryslân (friesland), nl.

education

studied architectural design (with jan rietveld) and ceramic design (with jan van der vaart) at the rietveld academy in amsterdam (nl).

got his master in fine art (painting and sculpture) at the new york academy of art, a school co-founded by andy warhol.
