tineke bruijnzeels investigates the essence.

what is essential in a material, an object, in a space?

her work varies from small abstract drawings to layered minimalist paintings, objects and installations.

it arises from curiosity about the use and function of objects and materials.

she works searching and experimenting with various materials:

from dozens of layers of acrylic paint or hundreds of sheets of paper to metal, wood, oil pastel, and copper and gold foil.

she draws with pencil and pen but also with combs, steel wire, sewing thread, nails and chicken wire.

playing with materials leads to unexpected possibilities and outcomes that she could not have foreseen in advance.

what the work has in common is experimenting within self-imposed strict rules, and a repetition of actions.

not just a few times, but dozens or hundreds of times.

every action, no matter how small, is part of the final work.

she explains:

“rules create a limited space in which i investigate how far i can go, in order to find the essence.

the limits i set for myself are the limits within i create my work.”
